graphite (and some needle and thread)
thank you to This is an extension of the theme in a portrait of determinism [link] in which my goal was to visually convey what a bleak and dead-end theory determinism truly is. My intent with this drawing is to look at the implications of determinism a little further and those of determinisms ugly cousin: materialism. Materialism is the philosophical view that everything everywhere can be reduced to matter and energy relegating us fine Homo sapiens from beings of (assumed) spiritual dimension to the status of objects. Given the determinist/materialist outlook (that we, humans, are mere things with no will of our own) what are we to make of human relationships? In a worldview flattened down to utter thingfulness what are we to think about such quaint and antiquated concepts as love and compassion? Assuming the determinist/materialist is right (which I dont) how can love possibly be real? A thing can't genuinely love and/or be loved by other things. * Im not referring to love in terms of fleeting feelings, subjective sentiment, or sexual attraction. What I have in mind is the kind of love that includes seeing the intrinsic value of the person loved a value that is not quantitative or calculable. A love that transcends physicality. A love thats more like an insight than an illusion. |
